Succeeding the popular G9, the new Canon PowerShot G10 boasts a range of improved camera technology for camera enthusiasts.
Canon today announced the newest addition to its PowerShot G-series digital cameras. The Canon PowerShot G10 offers Canon's new DIGIC 4 image processor, a 28mm Optical Image Stabilized 5x zoom lens and RAW mode. As the successor to the PowerShot G9, the Canon PowerShot G10 features a 1/1.7" sensor with a resolution of 14.7 megapixels and a 3-inch LCD screen. Compare the Canon PowerShot G10 to competing 14-megapixel performance cameras here.
The Canon PowerShot G10 is equipped with a dedicated exposure compensation dial, a "My Menu" function for registering five user-selected options from the shooting menu, as well as 26 shooting modes. Additionally, the Custom Mode better allows the user to record two types of shooting parameter settings.
A host of accessory options are also offered, including the remote switch, Macro Ring Lite and Macro Twin Lite (when used with an additional attachment, available in January 2009). Now consumers can utilize similar accessories found in the Canon EOS line.
The newly upgraded DIGIC 4 image processor, a proprietary technology, accounts for the camera's improved performance levels, including significantly improved signal processing speed and higher image quality. One of the most important new features made possible is Servo AF, which is a form of continuous focus tracking for moving subjects. By pressing the shutter button half-way, the Canon PowerShot G10 can track subject movement up to the instant of exposure, which should result in sharper images.
Furthermore, the processor's high ISO speed noise reduction processing has also been improved, while a new Intelligent Contrast Correction function automatically improves image quality in high-contrast shooting situations. Another key improvement thanks to DIGIC 4 is improved face detection, and Canon claims that the Canon PowerShot G10 should be able to recognize human faces from more angles than earlier. Additionally, a new face detection self-timer will automatically take a photo two seconds after a new face enters the scene.
Scheduled to be available in October 2008, the Canon PowerShot G10 will have an estimated selling price of $500. Kit contents include a battery, charger, neck strap, USB and AV cables, Canon's software suite and a 1-year limited warranty.
