Revealing its thinnest iPod to date, the iPod nano 4G, as well as the iPod classic 120GB, Apple aims to maintain its high market share this holiday season.
At its Let's Rock event in San Francisco today, Apple announced the release of the iPod classic 120GB and the iPod nano 4G (fourth generation). The iPod classic 120GB (gallery) is available now for $250, in black and white versions. It's worth noting that the 80GB and 160GB versions of the iPod classic have now been discontinued.
The all new iPod nano 4G keeps the 2-inch QVGA display of its predecessor, but it's the thinnest iPod ever made. Available in nine colors (grey, black, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, violet), the iPod nano 4G measures 3.6 by 1.5 by 0.24 inches and weighs 1.3 ounces.
The iPod nano 4G has also received enhancements based on the iPhone / iPod touch. Specifically, the iPod nano 4G offers an enhanced user interface for its music management, as well as offering accelerometer technology. Turn the iPod nano 4G sideways and you're in Cover Flow with full size album art. Push and hold the center button for a popup menu, and shake the iPod nano 4G to shuffle. Genius playlists, a new iTunes 8 feature, also work with this device.
Photos and videos stored on the iPod nano 4G can be viewed in both portrait and landscape mode. Using the built-in accelerometer, users can simply tilt the device to switch between the screen orientations. Furthermore, the iPod nano 4G is the most "toxic-free" iPod created to date. Its body has a new curved aluminum design with curved glass, and the glass is arsenic-free. Apple also promises the iPod nano 4G to be free of BFR, Mercury and PVC toxics, and claims it to be highly recyclable.
Apple claims the iPod nano 4G will offer 24 hours of music playback and 4 hours of video playback, despite its thin body. Apple also announced the introduction of new in-ear headphones, which will cost $79.
The iPod nano 4G will be available pretty much immediately in two versions; an 8GB model for $150 and an 16GB model for $200.
