BlackBerry Curve 8330 vs. Palm Treo 800w vs. HTC MogulBy Sindre Lia, 7 September 2008
One of our readers is stuck between the Palm Treo 800w, BlackBerry Curve 8330 and HTC Mogul. Which one would be best for her?

Reader's question:

I'm about to upgrade my Sprint phone and I'm stuck between the Palm Treo 800w, RIM BlackBerry Curve 8330 and HTC Mogul. Which phone is the best one? Melissa

Editor's answer:

Right now, we're waiting for a software upgrade to arrive for the BlackBerry Curve 8330, namely BlackBerry OS 4.5. It'll add HTML e-mail support and document editing support (via DataViz DocumentsToGo), as well as improved media capabilities. This upgrade could also bring an improved web browser to the Curve, though only time will tell exactly what it'll get. All Curve owners are supposed to get the OS 4.5 upgrade for free.

Compared to the HTC Mogul and Palm Treo 800w, the BlackBerry Curve 8330 lacks Wi-Fi connectivity and a touchscreen. On the other hand, the BlackBerry Curve 8330 has got solid battery life, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 1GB memory card and comes pre-installed with a good range of IM applications (AOL, Yahoo, Google Talk and BlackBerry Messenger).

From a bird perspective, the BlackBerry Curve 8330 is a slightly more consumer centric smartphone than the Windows Mobile powered Palm Treo 800w and HTC Mogul. And though we don't have any sales figures to rely on, we're pretty sure that the BlackBerry Curve 8330 is the most popular smartphone in Sprint's portfolio right now.

As you've figured out by now, we don't have an exact answer to your question, but hopefully the information above will give you some more clues as to what to choose. You can also compare our detailed test results here, which will provide a good overview of the performance of these smartphones. It's pretty much a tie between the BlackBerry Curve and the HTC Mogul overall, but that's without the upcoming BlackBerry update.
