Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade guideBy Sindre Lia, 3 September 2008
ROM updates for a pile of Windows Mobile smartphones are now available. Our Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade guide will help you ensure a smooth update.

ROM updates for several Windows Mobile smartphones are now available, including a range of smartphones from AT&T Wireless, Sprint and Verizon Wireless. Each ROM update contains improvements based on whether the smartphone is running Windows Mobile Standard or Professional (touchscreen), as well as improvements that are carrier-dependent.

All user data will be deleted in the process of updating the ROM, including third-party applications. In other words, you're not asked to back up your data just in case something happens; the user data will simply be wiped out. Hence, SIM cards and memory cards should also be de-activated or removed before performing the ROM update.

Some of the smartphones can be upgraded over-the-air, but we highly recommend downloading the installation package and documentation. The documentation will not only provide installation info, but will also give an overview of the specific improvements you should expect on your smartphone.

After having backed up your data, it's time to run the ROM Update Utility (RUU) to install the ROM update. The process of performing the actual ROM update is pretty straightforward and should only take a few minutes to complete. However, when the ROM update is completed, the next and final step is to restore your user data from ActiveSync / Windows Mobile Device Center.

It's at that final step a solution called Sprite Backup comes into play. It'll cost you $30, but it may turn out to become a great investment. So before you hit the download pages below, make sure to check out Sprite Backup here first.
