The new Sony Walkman NWZ-S730, or NWZ-S738 and NWZ-S736 to be exact, offers ultra-slim design and noise-cancellation technology.

Sony today unveiled three new Walkman players, or actually six to be exact, boasting features geared for frequent travelers as well as budget conscious consumers.

The new Sony Walkman NWZ-S730 series, comprised of the NWZ-S738 8GB and NWZ-S736 4GB models, broadens options for listening to music from multiple sources, including many download stores and personal music collections. Support for popular audio and video codecs have been enhanced, as the S-series devices play Windows Media Video (WMV) files with DRM, allowing users to watch rights-protected movies and video clips from other media collections. The S-series also support "drag and drop" transfer of non-DRM music, videos, podcasts and playlists from online music services to Walkman players.

Additionally, the Sony Walkman NWZ-S730 series players are the first dedicated MP3 players with Sony's SensMe Channels function, which automatically creates channels that can align with a user's preferences. Based on this technology, the S-series players analyze a user's music collection and suggest channels based on each song's speed, mood and rhythm, ultimately leading to a choice of eleven themed channels from upbeat pop to emotional ballads.

The Sony Walkman NWZ-S730 series Walkman players also feature integrated active noise cancellation with supplied 13.5mm EX noise canceling headphones and an accessory cable that extends the noise canceling functionality of the device. On airplanes, users can additionally connect the player directly to a plane's audio video system with the included accessory cable, and enjoy regular in-flight entertainment with the bonus of noise cancellation.

Just 7.5mm thin, the Sony Walkman NWZ-S730 series is the slimmest Walkman players in any of the new series. It also sports a 2-inch QVGA screen, which promises smooth playback at up to 30 frames per second and selectable horizontal/vertical viewing. The interface can be personalized with the user's choice of 10 pre-installed wallpaper images or their favorite digital photo. The battery life is claimed to be 30 hours of music playback when the noise cancellation feature is activated, as well as 10 hours of video playback.

The Sony Walkman NWZ-S730 series will ship in two different storage capacities in late September 2008: The Sony Walkman NWZ-S736F has 4GB of memory and will cost about $150, while the Sony Walkman NWZ-738F has 8GB of memory and will cost about $180.

It's worth noting that video content transferred to these devices are converted to QVGA resolution during transfer, in order to enable smooth playback. Sony's Content Transfer software supports Windows Media Audio (WMA), non-secure AAC, linear PCM and MP3 music formats plus JPEG files for photos, in addition to the WMV with DRM, AVC (H.264/AVC) Baseline Profile and MPEG-4 video codecs.

Sony also took the wraps off the Sony Walkman NWZ-E436F (4GB, $100), Sony Walkman NWZ-E438F (8GB, $140), Sony Walkman NWZ-B133F (1GB, $45) and Sony Walkman NWZ-B135F (2GB, $60). The former two, offers the same functionality as the S730 devices, except for the noise-cancellation and SensMe functionality. In addition, these E-series devices offer up to 45 hours of music playback and up to 8 hours of video playback. The B-series devices are audio only, and offers up to 16 hours of music playback.
