Nokia 6650 smartphone for AT&T Wireless unveiledBy Sindre Lia, Wednesday 27 August 2008
A new multimedia smartphone is coming to AT&T Wireless this fall, as Nokia unveils the Nokia 6650 with AT&T branding and service integration.

Nokia today took the wraps off a new version of the Nokia 6650 for AT&T Wireless (specs). Powered by Symbian S60, the Nokia 6650 multimedia smartphone (mid-range) will be offered with several AT&T mobile services, including AT&T Navigator, AT&T Mobile Music and XM Radio.

More interestingly, the Nokia 6650 will ship with the S60 OSS Browser. This is the open source core of Nokia's Mini Map browser, which could mean that the Nokia 6650 will launch with an AT&T branded Webkit browser. Exactly what that implies remains to be seen, but Nokia encourages its partners to customize the look at least.

The Nokia 6650 provides access to music, camera, calendar, profiles and more through a small 1.36" external screen, while an internal 2.2" QVGA screen is revealed when opening the flip phone. Supported music formats include MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA format music up to 320 Kbps, and the music player is accompanied by XM Radio and RealOne Player. There's also a microSD memory slot supporting up to 8GB cards, but don't expect a memory card in the sales package.

What may really set the Nokia 6650 apart from most of AT&T's phones however, is the Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR support with an extensive list of profiles - 17 to be exact. It also supports Bluetooth Stereo for audiophiles, though owners of this phone will need to buy a converter to get their favorite headphones plugged in.

The Nokia 6650 is claimed to offer 4 hours of talk time, when connected to AT&T's 3G network. It'll also come pre-loaded with instant messaging clients such as AIM, Windows Live and Yahoo! Messenger.

The Nokia 6650 will be released on AT&T Wireless sometime this fall, with a subsidized price when signing up for a contract.
