The new Olympus SP-565 UZ is an extreme makeover of the SP-570 UZ, offering a smaller and lighter version with the same 20x wide-angle telephoto zoom lens.
Olympus has given the SP-570 UZ an extreme makeover by creating the new Olympus SP-565 UZ (compare), a smaller and lighter version with the same 20x wide-angle telephoto zoom lens (26-520mm equivalent). The camera is targeted at people searching for a portable ultra zoom camera, featuring a 10-megapixel CCD sensor and sensor-shift image stabilization.
The Olympus SP-565 UZ comes with enhanced face detection that can now track up to 16 faces within the frame. It also offers shadow adjustment technology, which is claimed to compensate for extreme contrasts to improve detail in shadows. Furthermore, the Olympus SP-565 UZ utilizes perfect shot preview, allowing users to preview and select various effects (such as zoom, exposure compensation, white balance and metering) live on the LCD screen, before snapping the shot.
The Olympus SP-565 UZ comes with a versatile f/2.8-4.5 lens providing the equivalent of 26-520mm focal length. By using the toggle lever with one finger, users is claimed to get close to the action with the compact 20x telephoto zoom, while the wide-angle (26mm) lens is promised to perform well in combination with super-macro capabilities. The latter enables the camera to lock its focus on details as close as one centimeter.
The compact lens construction combines aspherical and extra-dispersion (ED) lens elements claimed to deliver edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity. Whether users are hiking through the mountains or shooting a tennis match, the Olympus SP-565 UZ promises the versatility to get the job done.
The Olympus SP-565 UZ also offer Olympus' mechanical sensor-shift image stabilization, which adjusts the CCD to compensate for camera shake, which often occurs when zooming in on subjects and in low-light conditions when shutter speeds are slower. The incorporated Manual, Aperture Priority and Shutter Speed Priority modes will also provide versatility and control for improved performance in any situation. Users of the Olympus SP-565 UZ can adjust the f-stop for detailed portraits with softened backgrounds, or slowing the exposure speed to create the blurred effect of motion. An auto mode is also available for point-and-shoot situations.
The Olympus SP-565 UZ is capable of capturing 13.5 frames per second at 3-megapixels. The inclusion of Pre-Capture technology, which works in conjunction with High-Speed Sequential Shooting, enables users to capture the action before and after fully pressing the shutter button. Pre-Capture begins working as soon as the focus is locked, automatically archiving 10 frames in the camera's buffer memory prior to the shutter release. This functionality is meant for situations where timing is essential, such as photographing a tennis player serving, children playing or a whale breaching.
The Olympus SP565 UZ will ship with an enhanced TruePic III Image Processor, which promises sharper images at high ISO settings. In addition, the camera offers red-eye fix and 33 shooting modes including multi-fireworks. To capture fireworks displays, this multi-exposure feature overlays the fireworks. Other shooting modes include portraits, landscapes, night scenes and fast-action. The Olympus SP-565 UZ will also come with xD and microSD memory card slots.
The Olympus SP-565 UZ will be available in October 2008 for an estimated street price of $400.
