Samsung INNOV8 i8510 16GB multimedia smartphone unveiledBy Sindre Lia, Thursday 24 July 2008
The brand new Samsung INNOV8 i8510 aims to become the leading S60 multimedia smartphone when released in August.

Samsung today announced the launch of the Samsung INNOV8 i8510, a Symbian S60 smartphone featuring a 8-megapixel camera. The Korean manufacturer's portfolio of S60 smartphones have so far been focused on messaging capabilities, but the new Samsung INNOV8 i8510 aims to take mobile handset photography and multimedia experience to new heights.

The Samsung INNOV8 i8510 sports an 8-megapixel CMOS camera sensor with autofocus and dual power LED. Camera features include smart reader, image stabilizer, auto-panorama shot, smile shot, blink shot, wide dynamic range (WDR) and face detection. The Samsung INNOV8 i8510 should also be capable of recording VGA video @ 30 fps and QVGA @ 120 fps to DivX, H.263, H.264, WMV and MP4 video formats. The actual quality of the camera remains to be judged though, as Samsung's recent 5-megapixel camera phones haven't been of the best kind.

Still, Samsung chooses to target the Samsung INNOV8 i8510 towards the same audience as the Sony Ericsson C905 8-megapixel phone, though taking it even further by incorporating either 8GB or 16GB of memory capacity. Additionally, a microSD memory slot supports up to 16GB memory cards. The music player found in the Samsung INNOV8 i8510 supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, AMR and RealAudio audio formats. A 3.5 headphone jack, Stereo Bluetooth and DLNA compatibility is also supported. It also incorporates external dual speakers and 3D surround sound supported by DNSe 2.0

Furthermore, the Samsung INNOV8 i8510 features A-GPS, optical mouse, accelerometer and two 3D games: FIFA 2008 and Asphalt. The Samsung INNOV8 i8510 also offers a 2.8" 16M color screen, and the phone measures 106.5 by 53.9 by 17.2 mm. Samsung claims a talk time of up to five hours for the included 1200 mAh battery.

Featuring Wi-Fi connectivity and Symbian OS V9.3, S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, the Samsung INNOV8 i8510 promises an PC-like browsing experience. European users will also take advantage of HSDPA, but the Samsung INNOV8 i8510 will unfortunately not work on AT&T Wireless or T-Mobile's (upcoming) HSDPA networks, at least not this version.

Operating on Quad-band GSM networks, the Samsung INNOV8 i8510 will be launched in Europe in August, and then expanding to other markets during September. Stay tuned for our hands-on preview to be posted soon.
