Qualcomm has now re-opened the gate for the next 15 years as far as Nokia is concerned; nothing but a historical moment in the mobile industry.
Nokia and Qualcomm today announced that they have entered into a new agreement covering various standards including GSM, EDGE, CDMA, WCDMA, HSDPA, OFDM, WiMAX, LTE and other technologies. The agreement will result in settlement of all litigation between the companies, including the withdrawal by Nokia of its complaint to the European Commission.
Nokia has been granted a new license under all Qualcomm's patents for use in Nokia's mobile devices and Nokia Siemens Networks infrastructure, for the next 15 years. Further, Nokia has agreed not to use any of its patents directly against Qualcomm, enabling Qualcomm to integrate Nokia's technology into Qualcomm's chipsets.
Nokia has agreed to assign ownership of a number of patents to Qualcomm, including patents declared as essential to WCDMA, GSM and OFDMA. The specific terms are confidential.
Nokia promises the agreement to be positive for the industry, enabling the market to benefit from innovations and new technologies. Let's hope they mean some subsidized CDMA smartphones for Sprint or Verizon Wireless to begin with. The Nokia E71, Nokia N95 8GB or Nokia N78 would be a good match for Sprint, as well as for Verizon Wireless' new "open network" model.
