The unlocked Palm Centro gets cell tower triangulation with Google Maps for mobile with My Location.
Palm today announced the availability of the popular Palm Centro on their own Web store, the first time the diminutive smartphone has been available without a carrier agreement. The GSM version of the phone, similar to AT&T's Palm Centro, will be available for $300 in a similar color scheme, albeit with grey keys instead of the appealing green QWERTY on the AT&T device.
Besides being available contract-free, the Palm Centro will also use Google Maps for mobile with My Location. The My Location feature uses cell-tower triangulation to get a somewhat-accurate fix on the phone's position. In our experience using the Google Maps for mobile with My Location with the Apple iPhone and the HTC Touch Dual, results can be mixed, but the experience is decidedly better than being completely lost. We would still prefer that Palm add real GPS to the device, as well as HSDPA for 3G networking, as long as we're compiling a wishlist.
Of course, the primary appeal of the Palm Centro is its low price. The phone is $100 on Verizon Wireless, Sprint and AT&T. Perhaps the benefit of avoiding a contract is worth $200 to some buyers (which would be strange, considering it only costs about $175 at worst to get out of a carrier contract), so for those folks, the unlocked Palm Centro is available now directly from Palm's Web site.
