When buying a TTY or hearing aid compatible cell phone or smartphone, the best way to start is to check out the major carriers' resource centers on the subject. They all offer various special plans and solutions, as well as lists for compatible phones.
When shopping for a TTY or hearing aid compatible phone, it's important to remember that you can usually return a phone within 30 days without paying for anything but the actual usage – check with your local store.
It's worth noting that it's usually necessary to purchase an adaptor for the cell phone, in order to connect TTY equipment. A lot of phones simply come with proprietary ports, while most TTY equipment uses a 2.5mm plug. For those who live in an area with T-Mobile coverage, it's also worth noting that T-Mobile has teamed up with Hitec to provide a full TTY kit for certain cell phones.
