When shopping for a TTY or hearing aid compatible phone, it's important to remember that you can usually return a phone within 30 days without paying for anything but the actual usage – check with your local store.
It's worth noting that it's usually necessary to purchase an adaptor for the cell phone, in order to connect TTY equipment. A lot of phones simply come with proprietary ports, while most TTY equipment uses a 2.5mm plug. For those who live in an area with T-Mobile coverage, it's also worth noting that T-Mobile has teamed up with Hitec to provide a full TTY kit for certain cell phones.
