The Sony HDR-CX12 is the world's first camcorder to offer both smile and face detection, and will ship with a 4GB memory card in August.
Sony today unveiled the world's first camcorder to incorporate both smile shutter and face detection technologies. The Sony HDR-CX12 Memory Stick Handycam camcorder can record full 1920 x 1080 HD video and snap 10-megapixel photos. Measuring 2.8-inches wide by 5.3-inches tall by 2.8-inches deep, the compact camcorder will ship with a supplied 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo card.
With Sony's new Smile Shutter technology, users of the Sony HDR-CX12 can capture smiling photos and record video at the same time. When activated, the technology will detect and automatically take a photo when the subject smiles, without having to switch to photo mode or press the photo button.
The Sony HDR-CX12 also features child and adult prioritization so users can capture photos when an intended subject group smiles. The camcorder can also detect and capture a smile while in standby mode.
In addition to face detection technology, the Sony HDR-CX12 is packed with features such as ClearVid CMOS sensor with Exmor, a BIONZ imaging processor, a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T 12x optical zoom lens and Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization.
The Sony HDR-CX12 has a 2.7-inch LCD screen, Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound recording and a built-in zoom microphone to better record dialogue. It also has an assignable dial that can be customized to manually control focus, brightness and white balance.
The Sony HDR-CX12 will be available in stores early August 2008 for approximately $900. The sales package will include a HandyCam Station cradle and Picture Motion Browser software for compatible PCs.
