Toshiba responds to consumer expectations by unveiling faster 1.8-inch HDDs for mobility devices requiring high-capacity storage.
Toshiba today announced a new line-up of 1.8-inch hard disk drives adopting a serial ATA interface, including the industry's first drive of this type with a capacity of 160GB. The new 160GB drive and an 80GB drive will enter mass production in August.
Toshiba's new 1.8-inch HDDs boost interface speed to 1.5Gbps and offer a rotation speed of 5400 RPM. The new 160GB drive is more environmentally efficient than Toshiba's current 120GB SATA model, and increases energy consumption efficiency to 0.00281W/GB, a 25% improvement. The drive also improves the maximum internal data transfer rate by approximately 17%, and supports faster data access in reading and writing.
Tremendous growth in the sub-notebook, thin-and-light mobile PC category has brought 1.8-inch HDDs to the forefront of small form factor computing, accompanied by consumer expectations for a computing experience equal to larger-sized mobile PCs and storage capacities that rival desktop PC systems.
According to IDC, the thin-and-light mobile PC category is forecasted to experience a 54 percent CAGR (compound annual growth) worldwide from 2006 to 2011, driven by interest from the consumer market segment and fueled by advancements in mobile processors and wireless connectivity. As a result, IDC projects 1.8-inch HDD shipments will grow to more than 26 million units by 2012, with a 58 percent CAGR attributed to portable PC integration.
Toshiba has shipped more than 60 million 1.8-inch HDDs worldwide since 2000, and the company is now shipping its 17th generation of 1.8-inch HDDs and has brought to market more than 25 different models. The company's main competitor, Samsung, will likely follow Toshiba in announcing faster models soon.
