Seven new Sony LCD HDTVs will hit American store shelves this fall; two Sony Bravia XBR8 models, two XBR7 models and three new XBR6 models.
Sony today introduced seven new Bravia XBR LCD HDTVs including models with Triluminos LED backlight and local dimming for improved black-level reproduction and contrast. The new models expand the Bravia LCD line up to 30 models ranging in screen sizes from 19 to 70 inches measured diagonally.
Sony Bravia XBR8 55- and 46-inch LCD HDTVs
Leading the XBR line is the full HD 1080p 55-inch KDL-55XBR8 and 46-inch KDL-46XBR8 models (image gallery), incorporating Triluminos LED backlight technology with local dimming and ACE PRO technology. The Triluminos technology expands the TV's color range by aligning individual clusters of red, green and blue LEDs. ACE PRO controls the LED backlight level by area so that detail is maintained in the dark areas, while other areas are driven near peak brightness. Coupled with 10-bit processing and 10-bit panel, these technologies are claimed to provide deeper black levels and more accurate color reproduction.
The Sony Bravia XBR8 models also feature Bravia Engine 2 PRO -- Sony's latest picture processing technology -- as well as Motionflow 120Hz high frame rate technology. The models also come with x.v.Color compatibility, which is claimed to result in more natural and vivid colors.
For multimedia playback, the Sony Bravia XBR8 models feature a Digital Media Extender (DMeX), Digital Media Port (DMP) for music playback as well as DLNA support for photo playback. The DMeX allows users to connect optional expansion modules to the HDTVs, including DVD Link, Wireless Link, Input Link, will ship later this year, and the currently available Bravia Internet Video Link.
The Bravia Internet Video Link module attaches to the back of a selection of 2007 and 2008 Bravia LCD HDTVs. The service streams on-demand entertainment including movies, TV programs, YouTube videos and a variety of other web content. The service connects to the Internet via existing broadband Ethernet connections, and content is navigated with Sony's Xross Media Bar user interface. A new 3D Favorite menu has also been added.
Inputs found on the Sony Bravia XBR8 models include 4x 1080/60 24p HDMI connections (HDCP), 2x 1080/60p HD component inputs, a 1080/60p-capable PC input, Ethernet (RJ-45) port and a RS-232c connection.
Sony Bravia XBR7 70- and 40-inch LCD HDTVs
The full HD 1080p XBR7 series includes the 70-inch KDL-70XBR7 and 40-inch KDL-40XBR7 models (image gallery), featuring WCG-CCFL backlight, 10-bit processing and 10-bit panel, as well as ACE. The XBR7 70-inch model features Bravia Engine 2 Pro processing, while the XBR7 40-inch model offers Bravia Engine 2 EX. Both models feature Motionflow 120Hz and x.v.Color technology.
Furthermore, the Sony Bravia XBR7 models offer the new 3D Favorite menu, XMB interface, Bravia Sync, DMeX, DMP for music playback and DLNA support for photo playback. Inputs include 4x 1080/60 24p HDMI connections (HDCP), 2x 1080/60p component inputs, a 1080/60p PC input, Ethernet and RS-232c connection.
Sony Bravia XBR6 52-, 46- and 40-inch LCD HDTVs
Complementing the previously announced 32- and 37-inch models in Sony's Bravia XBR6 line, the full HD 1080p 52-inch KDL-52XBR6, 46-inch KDL-46XBR6 and the 40-inch KDL-40XBR6 models (image gallery) were also introduced today. The models offer a space-saving bottom speaker, floating-glass industrial design and all of the features found in the 40-inch Bravia XBR7 model above, except for the RS-232c connection and Bravia Engine 2 EX.
All of the new Bravia XBR series models also offer the option of additional speaker grille color accents including silver, red, brown and gold. XBR8 and XBR7 models ship with a black grille cover and the XBR6 ships with a silver grille cover. Additional grille covers are sold separately.
All the new Sony Bravia XBR models will be available in the fall of 2008.
