An upcoming ultraportable from Dell, initially referred to as Dell Mini Inspiron, could be one of the first laptops powered by Intel's new Atom processor.
Dell's corporate blog today posted two press images of an upcoming Dell mini Inspiron ultraportable laptop. Sales figures for traditional ultraportable laptops have been low so far, mainly due to high retail prices. When Asus created its EEE category of mini ultraportables, they key was to offer configurations costing less than $500.
The main difference between a mini ultraportable that typically comes with a 7- or 8.9-inch screen and a standard ultraportable that typically comes with a 11.1- or 12.1-inch screen, is exactly that, the screen size. And a slightly more cramped keyboard, of course. The hardware in both is so limited that they are mainly useful for basic productivity tasks and web browsing.
When Asus first introduced the EEE, it was a Linux project. However, Microsoft has now caught interest in this market (check out the HP 2133) and several new mini ultraportables powered by Windows will likely appear in store shelves down the road. The Dell mini Inspiron could be one of those, and could possibly also become one of the first ultraportables to feature Intel's new Atom 1.6GHz processor.
