A yet to be announced Sony Ericsson G702 may give clues about Sony Ericsson's U.S. strategy. Read on to find out more.
Phonescoop certainly lived up to its name yesterday, as the Web site uncovered the Sony Ericsson G702 multimedia phone, which has yet to be announced, in the FCC database. Originally aimed at the Asian market, the Sony Ericsson G702 boasts a 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, WayFinder GPS services and a Memory Stick M2 memory slot.
According to its user manual, the Sony Ericsson G702 operates on GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and HSDPA 2100 MHz networks; clearly it's not U.S. carrier material, at least at first sight. But with recent statements from Sony Ericsson executives about rolling out more cell phones in the American market, why on earth would the Swedish manufacturer send Asian phones to FCC?
According to the FCC test reports, the Sony Ericsson G702 has passed Wi-Fi testing and should operate on GSM/EDGE 850/1900 MHz. For all we know, this could mean that an American version of the Asian handset is on its way to a carrier in love with Wi-Fi services. Still, only time will tell what's really going on.
