Qualcomm's new color mirasol mobile screens are on display at SID 2008 in Los Angeles this week. Find out what's unique about this technology.
Qualcomm today at the SID 2008 conference demonstrated the first reflective Interferometric Modulation (IMOD) color mirasol display. The first 0.9-inch IMOD color mirasol display will be introduced by Freestyle Audio, creator of a rugged MP3 player for outdoor enthusiasts.
IMOD technology requires no backlighting and reflects light so that wavelengths interfere with each other creating pure, vivid colors. Qualcomm aims to incorporate its new displays in mobile devices, such as MP3 players and mobile phones. A mirasol display is claimed to require significantly less power and to harness ambient light sources to automatically scale for optimal viewing in virtually any lighting condition.
Initially developed as bichrome displays, Qualcomm believe that coming up with color displays will help move mirasol displays into the mobile world. Inventec, the manufacturer behind the recently introduced Velocity Mobile smartphones plans to incorporate mirasol displays in future smartphones. Qualcomm is demonstrating both color and bichrome mirasol displays at SID 2008 in Los Angeles this week.

Mirasol display vs. TFT LCD display (Not the most scientific comparison we've seen - so this could be yet another useless Qualcomm fairytale)
