New in-cell multi-touch, ultra-thin mobile displaysBy Sindre Lia, Monday 19 May 2008
AU Optronics will showcase a range of new mobile and curved e-paper displays at SID 2008 in Los Angeles this week.

AU Optronics is unveiling today what's claimed to be the world's first Curved Display Technology on glass substrate. This technology will be exhibited at SID Display Week 2008 in Los Angeles. In addition, a series of mobile device technologies will be showcased for the first time at the exhibition.

The Curved Display is developed and produced with a TFT-LCD process on glass substrate. The curved radius is 100mm, and therefore requires a special thinning technology. A specially designed curved backlight unit is supposed to maintain uniformity in brightness and contrast on the curved surface. Unlike the existing e-paper on a flexible substrate, AUO's new curved display technology is claimed to bring TFT-LCD technology into play in terms of both color performance and image quality. As such, the company expects to apply it to some curved display applications in the future, including watches and dashboards.

AUO will also demonstrate a series of mobile device technologies, including an ultra-thin 1.9-inch TFT-LCD. With a thickness of merely 0.63mm and a weight of 2.1 grams, the screen offers 400nits in brightness and should be sunlight readable.

In-cell multi-touch technology through 4.3-inch and 8-inch TFT-LCDs will also be showcased by the company, integrating touch function features into the TFT manufacturing process without adding additional glass. The screens also offer new anti-glare properties to retain proper image color saturation and readability in direct sunlight. As one of few companies, AUO expects its 4.3-inch screen to reach mass production this spring.

Unfortunately, neither of the screen sizes AU Optronics seems to have aimed for is typically attractive to mobile users; however, the company will also unveil its Grease Free and Touch Mura Free technology to meet the increased expectations in a booming touch panel display market. This technology coats AF (Anti-Fouling) layer as part of the surface treatment of the polarizer, therefore attaining a fingerprint free surface. In addition, its grease-resistance features help to easier wipe off smudges and grease from the display. This technology will be demonstrated on a 2.4" AMVA-mobile panel.
