Samsung SDI, the world's largest manufacturer of OLED displays, has unveiled some new impressive OLED technology demonstrated by cool prototypes.
Samsung SDI recently announced that they are now mass producing QVGA AMOLED displays for cell phones. Now, the Korean manufacturer will demonstrate a 12.1" Active Matrix OLED display at the SID 2008 conference in Los Angeles next week.
By adding conventional silicon oxide TFTs to the mix, Samsung SDI claims to be maintaining a low price per unit. The new 12.1" screen supports a resolution of 1280 by 768 pixels, and is the world's first WXGA TFT AMOLED display for notebooks.
Samsung SDI has also implemented a transparent video screen in front of a light-emitting transparent top-emission, ultimately leading to a transparent AMOLED display capable of showing transparent film like seen in "Minority Report". These displays are however still a few years away from covering a wall, as the current prototype seems to be a 4.82-inch QVGA TEOLED screen.
The new 12.1" AMOLED display for notebooks (see prototype below) should find its way to notebooks in Korea soon. Since Samsung is also about to offer its notebooks in the American market, it could mean that we'll see new innovations appearing more rapidly here in the future. As for the transparent TEOLED display, they'll probably not appear in store shelves anytime soon.
