Sprint, Samsung declare WiMAX ready for commercial serviceBy Sindre Lia, Thursday 15 May 2008
Sprint has finally seen extensive Mobile WiMAX testing go through with success, and 2009 seems to be the estimate for wide deployment.

Sprint and Samsung announced today that Sprint's Xohm network technology has finally met the required standards when it comes to overall performance, handoff performance and handoff delay. This key technical milestone has been passed after extensive evaluation both in the Xohm lab environment and with the commercial service network being built in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area. After several delays, Sprint plans on launching commercial WiMAX service in those two markets later this year.

Samsung has been working with Sprint in the United States to test and build Sprint's Xohm network compliant to the mobile WiMAX standard (Read about our trip to Samsung's WiMAX lab in Korea). Since finalizing a supply agreement in 2007, the two companies have steadily made progress on the extensive project with previous key milestones including first data session in the lab (June 2007), first data session on the live network (October 2007) and successful interoperability testing with multiple other device vendors (April 2008).

Last month, Samsung announced the introduction of several WiMAX-enabled devices, including the Q1 Ultra UMPC. The Korean manufacturer will soon also introduce notebooks in the U.S. market, likely to come equipped with built-in WiMAX connectivity.

As for the further deployment of the Xohm network, Sprint recently announced that they are currently founding a new wireless company along with a range of industry leaders, including Clearwire, Google, Intel, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks. The company will be named Clearwire (more information), and aims to have a nationwide Mobile WiMAX network up and running within a couple of years.
