One of our readers wonders which U.S. carrier will pick up the HTC Touch Diamond. We think we have a pretty good idea, so read on to get the answer.
Reader's question: Do you know which carrier will be handling the HTC Diamond when it becomes available in the United States in the second half of 2008? Jean S.
Editor's answer:
We won't go as far as saying that the HTC Diamond was custom built for T-Mobile, but it's only a matter of time before it passes through FCC with 1700 MHz 3G support (T-Mobile's 3G frequency). T-Mobile recently soft launched its 3G network in New York, and when September arrives, the HTC Diamond and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 will most likely become flagship models of T-Mobile's 3G smartphone line-up. We wouldn't be surprised to see a HTC smartphone based on Google's Android OS in there this fall too, namely the HTC Dream. And of course, there'll finally be a 3G Sidekick when we are first at it.
Though T-Mobile is well-known for its boring focus on calling and light messaging services, they've had a solid foot in the doorsteps of HTC and Microsoft for almost a decade, and have been a part of Google's Open Handset Alliance from day one. The fall of 2008 will simply be all about T-Mobile announcing 3G enabled multimedia smartphones like they've never done anything else.
That said, we don't think there'll be any long-term exclusives on the HTC Touch Diamond, so it could additionally appear as CDMA smartphones on Sprint and Verizon Wireless, since these carriers already have versions of the original Touch. AT&T could also catch interest in the TouchFLO 2 interface, though they will probably be too busy shipping out 3G iPhones for the entire second half of 2008.
