Some of the best multimedia smartphones have seen a 30% price cut since introduction. Is that only the beginning?
We won't go as far as saying that the multimedia smartphone market is in free fall as far as pricing is concerned, but the Nokia N95, Apple iPhone 8GB and Helio Ocean have all received a 30% price cut since introduction. The price cuts will likely continue on most of these older models, as new and more capable contenders are introduced.
Among the new contenders we find the recently introduced Nokia N95 8GB with AT&T HSDPA support, while Apple is slated to release the 3G iPhone on AT&T in late June. Apple is also regularly adding new software features to the iPhone by means of highly popular firmware upgrades, and version 2.0 will be released in June.
Feeling the heat, even Microsoft has now decided to release a slightly upgraded Windows Mobile interface in a firmware upgrade coming this spring. The Redmond camp will also throw in a more Web-friendly Internet Explorer Mobile later this year.
For many potential buyers of multimedia smartphones, it may be worth sitting a couple months on the fence though, until the next-generation iPhone hits store shelves. European carriers have already heavily slashed the iPhone price tag, which may say it all. However, there are still plenty of options right now for those who can't wait:
