Sanyo releases a pair of clamshells for Sprint's CDMA Direct Connect service. Do they live up to Sanyo's reputation?

Sanyo Pro 700 Specs »  Gallery »
Sanyo Pro 700 Sanyo has always been a company that makes functional, though not necessarily pretty phones. So, it makes sense to see them jump into the rugged phones on Sprint's Nextel Direct Connect network. This phone, and the less-rugged Sanyo Pro 200 (check out our gallery here), mark Sanyo's entry into the new Direct Connect CDMA network. The Pro 700 is a very rugged feeling phone, and it meets military spec for dust, shock and vibration, so we can't wait for the opportunity to throw it around. Otherwise, it felt very light for its built, but the bolted-on metal faceplate and thick, rubber shell lets you know it can take a beating. We like that Sprint is branching out the feature set on these new Nextel phones, and the Sanyo Pro 700 features GPS to use Sprint Navigation. We even had a chance to try out some of the walkie-talkie functions, and the speaker on this phone was as loud as we'd expect on a Nextel device. Release: June 2008. Price: $180.
Pros: Very rugged, military spec for shock, dust and vibration. CDMA for data. GPS for navigation.
Cons: Big (though not heavy). Limited audience for Direct Connect. Lacks full multimedia feature suite.
