It was only a month ago at Mobile World Congress that we got our hands on the Motorola DH01 mobile TV device, and already Motorola has given the player an upgrade. Though the company is touting the inclusion of a new, improved touchscreen interface, what we're most interested in is the devices new HSDPA / GPRS radio, presumably for data transmission, but voice can't be out of the question. So, Motorola's DVB-H mobile TV device has become a full-fledged internet tablet.
The feature set is impressive, though many of these advanced ideas rely on a polished interface, so we'll be skeptical until we've seen them in action. Still, the DH02 features a PVR to record mobile broadcasts, as well as a buffer to pause up to five minutes of programming. Not enough to skip all the commercials of a live broadcast, of course.
The DH02 has also picked up a GPS receiver, as well as navigation software provided by Tele Atlas. Motorola is bragging about voice activated directions, which we presume means tagging some favorites with pre-recorded tags, and not full-fledged speech recogniction. We're more interested in the handsfree calls to point-of-interest locations. Will these require a Bluetooth connection to our cell phone, or will the DH02's built-in cellular radio make the call?
No pricing or release date has been announced, but we don't expect this device to make it to the U.S., since we have a distinct lack of DVB-H broadcasts. Still, we'll have hands-on with this device at next week's CTIA 2008 in Las Vegas.
