Samsung's new flagship packs plenty of high-end feature and a contextual touch screen. Will this phone bear Samsung's standard through the year ahead?

 Samsung's new flagship phone, the SGH-U900 "Soul," is a thin, shiny slider, just like you might expect to start Samsung's Ultra Edition III series. Unfortunately, there isn't much innovation under the hood. The phone bears more than a passing resemblance to LG's new KF600 (the LG Venus here in the States,) and in fact the Samsung phone doesn't utilize the contextual touch screen nearly as well as the LG phone does. We had no trouble browsing menus and using the playback and camera controls, but the entire experience left us wanting more, some real innovation. Instead, we got a very high end slider, with fast networking and a 5-megapixel camera, but nothing new on the interface side, and no feature that will bring power users out of the woodwork to queue up for this phone. Hopefully, there's more up Samsung's sleeve in the months ahead. Release: April 2008. Price: $575.
Pros: Very slim, shiny design. High-end features like 5-megapixel camera, 7.2Mbps HSDPA.
Cons: Contextual touch menu similar to LG's phones, maybe not as well-utilized. This is Samsung's best phone for the year?
