The Samsung SGH-F490 would have been a much more impressive phone if the interface and body had received the update it deserved since the F700 was released. While the phone's "Croix" interface may look well-designed, it is much easier to view than it is to use. The touch interface on this phone simply doesn't flow like it should, like it does on the iPhone. The 16:9 aspect ratio and large screen make this a nice phone for multimedia content, however, and Samsung hasn't skimped on the HSDPA networking or 5-megapixel camera features. But really, Samsung, a 3.5mm headphone jack should be standard, not a bulleted feature. Release: April 2008. Price: $600.
Pros: Wide, 3.2-inch, 16:9 screen. 3.5mm headphone jack. 5-megapixel camera.
Cons: Croix interface never kept up with the better touch UI on the market, could use an update.
