The Nokia N96 is a stylish, though not enticing update to the N95. We're not too fond of the bland, rounded corners, and we're getting kind of tired of the Symbian S60 interface. Still, mobile television, using DVB-H here in Barcelona, looked great, and the phone is so feature-packed that it's hard not to admire. But what we really wanted was something we could touch, on the screen, that is. Reps tell us that flash video in the Web browser is a few quarters away, and the specs tell us that even die-hard importers will have a hard time enjoying this phone in the U.S. Still, the news maps program was very smooth, and pictures looked excellent from the Carl Zeiss optics, even with the LED flash. Release: August 2008. Price: $750.
Pros: Thinner than the N95. Mobile TV. Kick stand for easy viewing. Excellent feature set.
Cons: Still not an attractive device. S60 aging, needs some touch and polish. Flash videos and Web 2.0 still far off.
