Sony Ericsson's new W980 has everything we like about a Walkman phone, including the excellent Walkman player, a nice slim design and a rich, colorful interface. We weren't crazy about the touch sensitive buttons on the front, but in our hands-on time with the device, they worked perfectly, and the exterior screen was a nice touch. Some might fret over the lack of an expansion slot, but 8GB of internal memory is plenty for us, and if the FM broadcast radio works well (we've had problems with this sort of device in the past), it would be nice to cut some cords in the car. Of course, the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack is a serious oversight, but Sony has to sell peripherals somehow, right? Release: August 2008. Price: $400.
Pros: Slim design, 8GB of built-in storage, great Walkman player, FM transmitter.
Cons: No real headphone jack, touch sensitive buttons aren't our favorite.
