Sony Ericsson's new Xperia X1 wows us with its wide screen and dazzling interface, but we got scowls when we opened the "Start" menu. Check out our impressions and pics of Sony Ericsson's new flagship.

The second time we've seen the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, this was the first time we were allowed to play with it a bit and touch the screen. The panels software is still in serious beta, but it has some nice potential. Basically, the panels are customizable Today screens that can act as general information displays, specific apps and programs, or portals to the internet. On the goldfish panel, the fish don't just respond to your touch, they change colors depending on battery life, incoming calls, or other status reminders. We're pretty confident that Sony Ericsson will smooth out the interface to make it more responsive by launch time. We're also hoping they realize that even with new Today screens, Windows Mobile could use a Sony Ericsson hand at the media player, and perhaps even the Web browser. In any case, this is still our most anticipated Windows Mobile phone of the year, by far. Release: September 2008.
Pros: WVGA screen, high-end camera features, optical joystick, cool arc slide design, panels interface.
Cons: We're unsure how deep the rabbit hole goes, and beneath it all lurks Windows Mobile. Interface still in beta.
