Nikon today added four new models to its S-series of ultra compact cameras, in addition to two new compact cameras: the Coolpix P60 and L18.

Nikon's Coolpix line is receiving a makeover with the addition of six colorful cameras. Available in colors such as Plum, Cool Blue and Ruby Red, these ultra compact cameras are powered by Nikon's EXPEED image processing engine.

The Coolpix S600 features a 10-megapixel sensor, a 4x wide-angle 28-112mm Zoom-NIKKOR lens, VR image stabilization and has ISO capabilities up to 3200 for low-light performance. The S600 also adds an Active Child mode to the 14 existing scene modes that are standard in Coolpix cameras. The S600 is claimed to turn on in just 0.7 seconds, and offers enhanced face-priority autofocus, in-camera red-eye fix and D-lighting to compensate for excessive backlight or insufficient flash in images. Release: March 2008. Price: $300.

The Coolpix S550 boasts a 10-megapixel sensor, a 5x Zoom-Nikkor lens, VR image stabilization and two new modes for portrait photography: Smile mode, which automatically triggers the shutter when the subject smiles, as well as Blink Warning, which displays a warning message when the subject has blinked. It also offer ISO capabilities up to 2000, and detects up to 12 faces in a single shot with the enhanced face-priority autofocus. Just like the S600, the S550 also offers red-eye fix and D-lighting. Release: March 2008. Price: $230.

The ultra-thin Coolpix S210 is 18mm (less than 3/4-inch) thin, and offers a 8-megapixel sensor, 3x Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens, Electronic Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization technology and an aluminum body. The S210 offers the same in-camera functionality as the S600 and S550. Release: March 2008. Price: $180.

The slim Coolpix S520 boasts the same hardware as the S210, but additionally offers some new niche features that make this the perfect camera for weddings and other important events. The camera's "Food mode" simply enables close-up images of food at high ISO settings, while a Face Zoom-in function allows users to quickly zoom in and switch between faces during playback on the 2.5-inch LCD display. Release: March 2008. Price: $230.

The Coolpix P60 sports an 8.1-megapixel sensor, 5x Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens with image stabilization and a light sensitivity range of up to ISO 2000. The P60 features face-priority autofocus, which automatically finds and focuses on up to five faces within the frame, red-eye fix and D-lighting. The camera's mode dial also includes two exposure modes - Programmed Auto and Manual - to offer users more creative control. The auto mode selects optimal shutter and aperture settings, while the manual mode provides full control over both. Release: March 2008. Price: $230.

The Coolpix L18 features an 8-megapixel sensor, 3x Zoom-NIKKOR lens, anti-shake functionality, a 3-inch LCD display and ISO capabilities up to 1600. The L18 features an Easy Auto Mode for carefree shooting, as well as a special playback option, which magnifies a subject's face to ensure that each image is scrapbook worthy. The camera also has 32MB of internal memory and is compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards. Release: March 2008. Price: $140.
