Entering Canon's PowerShot line near the top, the SD1100 IS retains the same classic ELPH form factor, with a funky little indent in the right side of the front of the camera, presumably to provide better grip. It comes in five "lyrically named" designer shades, which we won't waste time mentioning here. The basic stats are all on par for a $250 point-and-shoot, with an 8-megapixel sensor, optical image stabilization and a 3x zoom lens. It's face detection can detect up to nine human faces in a scene, but the interesting part is the Face Select and Track feature, which can lock on to a single face in the crowd and follow it as they move. A 32MB SD card is included, which would be impressive if people like Nikon's point-and-shoots didn’t come with more internal flash memory than that, rendering the 32MB card almost useless, especially for video. Release: March 2008. Price: $220.
Pros: Face Select and Track feature, good value
Cons: Average LCD screen

The Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH camera is geared towards style-conscious users, offering five "lyrical" colors including Bohemian Brown, Pink Melody, Rhythm and Blue, Swing Silver and Golden Tone. Still, the ultra compact 8-megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom is more than just style, as it boasts a range of high-end camera features too.
The SD1100 features Canon's Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) system, a new motion detection function linked to the camera's High ISO Auto mode and the proprietary DIGIC III imaging processor. The latter is claimed to provide faster start up, faster autofocus and quicker shutter response times, as well as improved image quality and less power consumption.
Users are offered a choice of 18 shooting modes including a fully automatic mode that is supposed to make this camera a true point-and-shoot affair. There's also a semi-automatic "Camera M" mode, which allows access to features such as Exposure Compensation and White Balance adjustments, as well as a plethora of scene selection modes including Canon's new Sunset mode.
The SD1100 features a 9-point Autofocus system along with the new AF-Point Zoom feature that work together with Face Detection Technology to allow users to double check the facial expressions of their subjects. The new camera also incorporates a newly developed Automatic Red Eye Correction. Memory cards supported by the SD1100 include SD and SDHC cards, as well as MMC, MMC+ and HC MMC+ cards.
Scheduled to be in stores beginning in March 2008, the five color versions of the PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH camera kit each include a battery pack and a charger, a 32MB SD memory card, a USB cable, an AV cable, a wrist strap, and Canon's software suite. Each kit carries an estimated retail price of $250.
