The update to the EOS Rebel XTi, the XSi sports a huge 3-inch live view LCD screen, the fastest burst mode on a Rebel to date (3.5 fps for up to 53 JPEGs and 6 RAWs). We were disappointed by the relatively low maximum ISO setting of ISO 1600, but the live viewfinder looks great on the large screen, and Canon also added a convenient new dedicated ISO button on the top of the camera. They finally broke down and switched to SD/SDHC memory cards from the faster Compact Flash, aiming directly at the consumer switching from a point-and-shoot to a DSLR, aka the majority of the market for entry-level DSLRs. It has an increasingly popular self-cleaning system on its sensor, which shakes off dust upon startup, shutdown or use of the "clean now" function. Aesthetically the XSi is similar to its predecessor, but has a slightly different grip and the aforementioned ISO button. Release: April 2008. Price: $800.
Pros: SD/SDHC card slot, live view LCD

The new 12.2-megapixel EOS Rebel XSi boasts an improved autofocus sensor, enhanced 14-bit A/D conversion, an advanced Live View function, and the proprietary DIGIC III image processor. When paired with compatible lenses, like the optically image stabilized EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS now included in the kit, the camera is claimed to deliver significantly improved image quality at lower costs.
The XSi model also incorporates pro features such as Highlight Tone Priority and High-ISO Noise Reduction functions, as well as a nine-point Autofocus system and RAW mode. The XSi is also claimed to be the fastest firing Rebel model to date, capable of continuously capturing 3.5 frames per second for bursts of up to 45 images in large/fine JPEG mode and 6 frames in RAW mode.
The new XSi camera is also equipped with a host of creative controls, including shutter speeds ranging from 1/4000 sec. to 30 sec. plus Bulb, a choice of four metering patterns including 4% spot metering (another first for the Rebel series), a wide range of exposure modes from fully automatic to fully manual, depth of field preview and mirror lock. The new camera is fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses, as well as EX-series Speedlites, an optional Battery Grip, and remote control and viewfinder accessories.
The new EOS Rebel XSi camera utilizes SD and SDHC memory cards, and also comes with Canon's new high-capacity LP-E5 lithium ion battery pack providing 50% more exposures per charge than earlier models with virtually no increase in size or weight.
The Canon EOS Rebel XSi is expected to ship in April 2008. The new camera will also be available in a lens kit version which includes the EF-S18 lens. The two versions carry estimated retail prices of $800 and $900, respectively.
