The Fujifilm S8100fd offers great image quality, a comfortably molded body and excellent manual controls. In future revisions, we'd like to see a dial for controlling shutter and f-stop settings, and it'd be nice if the camera were outfitted with a Li-ion battery instead of being tethered to double As. That said, nothing particular about the Fujifilm S8100fd stands out as bad, and quite a bit stands out as good, thus making it a solid choice for those looking for a fixed-lens with plenty of zoom. Release: March 2008. Price: $360.
Pros: 18x zoom. Good overall image quality. Great body.
Cons: A bit noisy. Could really use a dial or wheel controller.

FujiFilm announced today their latest update to the S8000fd, the 18x zoom FinePix S8100fd digital camera. An SLR-styled point and shoot, the S8100fd is yet another model aiming to bridge the gap between a point-and-shoot camera and a DSLR.
Using a wide angle Fujinon 18x zoom fixed lens, the 10-megapixel sensor has a mechanical stabilizer in addition to fast shutter speeds and a decent ISO 6400 (albeit at 5 Megapixels, not 10). Its 30fps movie recording is done in standard VGA resolution (640x480), but we liked the flexible card slot, which took both xD and SD/SDHC cards. Some may enjoy the flexibility of the 4AA batteries, but an included rechargeable option would have been welcome as well.
The FinePix S8100fd will debut in March 2008 at a retail price of $399.
