Olympus raises "shock-value" to 6.6 feet, adds manometer for camera-wielding scuba divers.
Olympus today released their new 10.1-megapixel beast, the shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof and dustproof Stylus 1030SW, designed to deliver images in even the toughest of conditions.
Able to withstand even more shock than its predecessors (improving from 5 feet to 6.6 feet), the camera also improved its underwater shooting and features a crushproof body that can withstand up to 220 pounds pressure. Olympus also announced the release of the 850SW (image gallery), which packs most of the same features but is shockproof only up to 5 feet and has an 8-megapixel sensor.
Fully submergible up to 33 feet, the 1030SW has added a built-in manometer, allowing users to know exactly what depth their photos were taken at, and even features a water-repellant coating on the lens, for unobstructed shots even when just emerging from the water. Just like previous SW models, the 1030SW is still freeze proof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and its rubber gaskets, o-rings and airtight seal make it dustproof and easy to clean. The 850SW is only rated up to 10 feet, but with the addition of the optional PT-043 underwater housing, users can extend the depth limit for either camera to 130 feet.
The Stylus 1030SW will be available in March for $400 and will include a wrist strap, USB cable, A/V cable, Li-Ion battery and charger, manual, warranty card and software CD-ROM. The 850SW will be available in January for $300.
