Most anticipated digital cameras of CES 2008By Staff, 15 January 2008
We've spent time with all the new digital cameras that were announced during CES. Which ones did we find most impressive?

Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1 Specs »  Gallery »
Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1 There's simply nothing else like the Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1. No other prosumer camera has faster shutter-speeds, and no other prosumer camcorder has anything close to its ultra-high frame-rates. The camera's Achilles heel, though, is that its still-image quality is competitive only with point-and-shoots, and its slo-mo videos are so tiny and compressed they're barely YouTube quality. The Casio EX-F1 is an incredible, endlessly fun device, and it feels like an important first in digital-imaging. Still, unless you really need to shoot at 1,200 fps for a very specific purpose and you don't care about image quality, the Casio EX-F1 is ultimately a tough sell. That said, we eagerly await the Casio Exilim Pro EX-F2. Release: April 2008. Price: $1000.
Pros: Insane shutter speeds. Unheard-of slo-mo capabilities. Innovative bracketing and buffered shooting modes.
Cons: Still-image quality is disappointing. Slo-mo video quality is detrimental. Lacks a continuously variable zoom.

Samsung NV24HD Specs »  Gallery »
Samsung NV24HD The first appearance of HD video on a samsung point-and-shoot digital camera, the NC24HD seems to have all the right numbers. With 720p video shooting, 30fps and 10.1-megapixels in their stylish NV frame, we're excited to get a hold of one for longer than a few minutes on the show floor, to see if the extra time it took Samsung to join the DSC HD video market gave it a leg up on its competitors. Release: May 2008. Price: $350.
Pros: HD video, concealable flash
Cons: Video only up to 720p

Casio Exilim Card EX-S10 Specs »  Gallery »
Casio Exilim Card EX-S10 The Casio Exilim Card EX-S10's strengths lie in its attractive styling, it automatic-shutter modes, and its top-notch video. It's image quality isn't quite as notable for its price-point - we would have preferred its larger sensor be wed to fewer pixels for better noise-management and more dynamic contrast - but its photographs are by no means a deal breaker. For those searching for a cool looking camera that takes good photos and packs features galore, the EX-S10 could fit the bill. Release: March 2008. Price: $250.
Pros: Nice looking. Good auto-shutter modes. Above average video quality. Very thin.
Cons: Pictures are a bit noisy. Sub-par viewfinder.

Sony DSLR-A200 Specs »  Gallery »
Sony DSLR-A200 Designed to be Sony's entry-level DSLR, the A200 uses Sony's BIONZ processing engine to process images taken with its 10.2-megapixel sensor. Compatible with Minolta as well as Sony alpha lenses, the A200 offers a great starting point for someone new to DSLR's albeit at a much higher price point than competitors' entry-level models like Nikon's D40. Release: March 2008. Price: $700.
Pros: Lighter and faster than predecessor, flexibility with lens choice
Cons: High price point

FujiFilm FinePix z100fd Specs »  Gallery »
FujiFilm FinePix z100fd Fujifilm’s FinePix Z100fd is stylish, has a cool on/off mechanism, and packs a collection of innovative features, but if you tend to change settings often, its interface just might make you tear your hair out. Unfortunately, the soft and chromatically inaccurate image-quality fails to make up for the camera’s aggravating interface, so for most users there are better point-and-shoots to be found. Release: February 2008. Price: $200.
Pros: Engaging design, optical image-stabilization, interesting shooting-aides.
Cons: Troublesome interface, no manual-mode, soft image-quality, consistently high color-temperature.

Samsung NV4 Specs »  Gallery »
Samsung NV4 The Samsung NV4's best feature is its array of filters and customization options, so you can use it as a simple point-and-shoot but still get creative results (assuming you're creative). It lacks optical image-stabilization, but its advanced form of digital stabilization isn't a complete write-off. Image quality in fair conditions was quite good, at least when it comes to portrait photography. We didn't really like the irksomely tiny buttons though, which along with the inner zoom lens revealed the camera's focus on thinness and compactness. Still, the filters and customization should save the day for point-and-shooters who enjoy taking pictures of friends and family with an artistic slant. Release: April 2008. Price: $190.
Pros: Stylish looks. Filters and customization galore.
Cons: Buttons suitable for toothpicks. Lacking in camera features, yet has unnecessary media playback. Even suped-up digital stabilization doesn't replace optical stabilization.
