Samsung debuts new Q1 Ultra Premium, NV24 HD camera, LCD TVsBy Sindre Lia, Sunday 6 January 2008
Upgraded Q1 Ultra? Check. Ultra compact HD digital camera? Check. 120Hz LCD TV with 4 ms response time? Check. Could there possibly be even more inside? Check.

Samsung today announced its new SC-HMX20 camcorder, featuring full HD and a 1080p mode with 30 fps recording capability. The flash-based camcorder utilizes a HDMI input and component connectivity to view home movies directly on a HDTV. The SC-HMX20 features a 6.4-megapixel CMOS with electronic image stabilization, and the 8GB of built-in flash memory is a nice addition for those who don't want to solely rely on the supported SDHC/MMC+ memory cards.

At 10.9 ounces, the SC-HMX20 fits into the palm for easier shooting, and comes equipped with a 2.7-inch widescreen touchscreen. Samsung also promises that the camcorder will take good still images, but you'll have to wait until May 2008 to try it out.

Lowered prices on existing Q1 models

The Q1 Ultra Premium was also unveiled by Samsung today, a new version of its existing Q1 Ultra that offers 7.5 hours of battery life, larger keycaps and an 80GB hard drive. The new UMPC is also fueled by a 1.33GHz ULV Intel Core Solo U1500 Pentium CPU running at a clock speed of 1.33GHz, as opposed to a 800MHz processor on the Q1 Ultra. A 1.3-megapixel camera has also found its way to the new device, while the screen size and resolution is still at 7 inches and 1024 by 600 pixels, respectively.

The Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium will soon be available for approximately $1150. Subsequently, the current Q1 Ultra will see a price cut as a result of the new introduction.

New NV24 HD camera

Samsung also introduced its new NV24 HD camera, a 10-megapixel point-and-shoot capable of shooting high-definition video. Additionally, with measurements of 3.8" by 2.4 by 0.7 inches, the ultra compact NV24HD is claimed to be the world's smallest, 24mm ultra-wide angle, 10-megapixel camera.

The NV24 HD gives shooters the ability to record video in 720p high-definition at a maximum frame rate of 30 fps. Shooters can also take advantage of a movie stabilizer and 3.6x optical zoom while recording video. With Samsung's successive recording mode, one can also pause and then resume filming without having to save the clips as individual files. A HDMI CEC cradle gives shooters the ability to view and share their images. The Samsung NV24 HD will be available in March 2008 for an MSRP of $350.

New LCD TVs

Samsung also found time to debut its new Series 6 and 7 full HD LCD TVs. The Series 6 LCD TVs boast a response time of only 4 ms and Samsung's Auto Motion Plus 120Hz motion blur reduction technology. Additionally, the Series 6 features the latest version of Samsung's super clear panel technology. Pricing details have yet to be announced, but 40-, 46- and 52-inch models are what you should look out for in March 2008.

Building on the technology found in the Series 6 models, the 750 LCD HDTVs will show MPEG and JPEG files stored on external devices by connecting through a side-mounted USB 2.0 port. Additionally, the Series 7 features internal flash memory loaded with content out-of-box, as well as an integrated woofer for enhanced audio. These HDTVs will be available in May 2008, in 40-, 46- and 52-inch sizes.

Home theater-in-a-box

Samsung also took the time to show off its new Bluetooth enabled home entertainment systems, including the HT-X710 and HT-X715 home theater-in-a-box systems to be available in April 2008. With a compact chassis, the 2.1-channel HT-X710 and the 5.1-channel HT-X715 integrate into most any home theater. Bluetooth capability is intended to make it easy to connect and control. Additionally, the HDMI CEC and 1080p up conversion features optimize the viewing experience. The HT-BD2 Blu-ray home theater-in-a-box system that is available now was also on display, boasting integrated Blu-ray playback, and a 7.1-channel system which delivers 1,100 watts of surround sound and full HD 1080p playback. The HT-BD2 decodes Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD, MP3 files and more.

BD-UP5500 Duo HD player

Another significant introduction made by Samsung today, was the BD-UP5500 Duo HD player. Brining together both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats in one device, the BD-UP5500 will be available in the second half of 2008. Using the BD-UP5500's ethernet connection, users can experience a broad array of viewing options with numerous movies as well as download new firmware. The player will support the latest audio decoding. With 7.1-channel PCM, DTS-HD High Resolution and Master audio, and Dolby True HD Bitstream output via HDMI 1.3, the BD-UP5500 aims to accurately reproduce every sound. The BD-UP5500 will come in a minimalist 2.3-inch slim design and a simple piano-black finish.

DLP-like technology in entry-level Plasma TVs

Taking a cue from the technology created for its DLP HDTVs, Samsung has developed the first 3D-ready, flat panel HDTVs on the market with the Series 4 plasma HDTVs. Samsung promises that advanced software algorithms will eliminate dither noise and false contour lines. 42- and 52-inch models for the entry-level market will be available in March 2008.

The 1080p Series 5 utilizes the same technology employed in the Series 4. In addition, a USB 2.0 port has been incorporated to make it easier to view content directly from digital devices such as cameras and MP3 players. Both the Series 4 and 5 models will come with three HDMI inputs. The Series 5 HDTVs will be available in March in both 50- and 58-inch models.
