Designed to give multiple-speaker power in a single cabinet, the 8-driver SurroundBar 360 includes a versatile console as well.

Polk Audio has unveiled the SurroundBar 360 DVD Theater, their two-piece surround sound system comprised of a single SurroundBar 360 multi-channel loudspeaker and a separate electronics console that contains an integrated DVD/CD player, SDA (Stereo Dimension Array) signal-processing amplifier and AM/FM radio.

The SurroundBar 360's glossy black enclosure is designed to complement flat-panel displays, especially those mounted on a wall. The speaker enclosure is magnetically shielded and can be mounted as close to the display as necessary. The cabinet delivers 360-degree surround sound via Polk's SDA technology first introduced in the 1980s. The SurroundBar 360 DVD Theater uses an updated version of the SDA technology that Polk says combines signal processing and acoustical geometry to create 360-degree surround sound from the device's eight drivers.

The electronics console features HDMI video output and uses Faroudja DCDi2 upconversion to turn any S-Video or composite signal into high-definition video in 480p, 720p and 1080i resolutions. It also displays digital still pictures in JPEG and Kodak Picture Disc formats. A USB input allows connections with digital photo sources and MP3 players.

The speaker measures 44 1/2" x 4 7/8" x 4 1/8", and the electronics console, which measures 16 1/2" x 11 1/2" x 3 3/16", supports DTS Digital Surround and Dolby Digital DVDs. It plays MPG2, MPG, CD, CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and MP3 formats.

The system includes four cradles (two low, two high) for mounting the speaker on a stand, a single 15-foot console-to-speaker cable, a six-foot composite video, a nine-foot power cord, an on-wall mounting option, dipole FM antenna, loop AM antenna, quick-start guide, owner's manual, and remote control. It will retail for $1,200.
