14.3-inch E-paper display has 1280 x 800 resolution, is less than 300 micrometers thin and has 180 degree viewing angle.

LG.Philips moved one step closer to a production model of their flexible displays with the announcement that they will debut the world’s highest resolution 14.3-inch flexible color E-paper display at the Consumer Electronics Show 2008.

The 14.3-inch E-paper display is equivalent in size to an A4 sheet of paper, has a 1280 x 800 resolution and can display up to 16.7 million colors. The energy-efficient displays are less than 300 micrometers thin, and only use power when the image changes.

LG.Philips says they used metal foil and plastic substrates rather than glass substrate to make the flexible color E-paper display bendable and durable. The 14.3-inch display uses a substrate that arranges thin-film transistors (TFT) on metal foil rather than glass, allowing it to recover its original shape after being bent. The 180 degree viewing angle allows for crisp images even when the display is bent.

LG.Philips says their processing technology minimizes panel deformation and prevents the circuit structure from changing during high-temperature processes. They plan to use the reflective foil substrate to make durable displays for electronic textbooks and smart ID cards, where picture quality is as important as durability and portability. Pricing and release dates have not yet been released.

Philip Berne, Matthew Ruiz, Edward Distel and Sindre Lia contribute to the CES 2008 coverage.
