3M's newest projection engine is the size of a wireless earpice and is designed for mobile electronics like mobile phones.
3M scientists have developed an ultra-compact, LED-illuminated projection engine designed for virtually any personal electronic device. Roughly the size of a wireless earpiece and less than half an inch thick, the 3M mobile projection engine delivers picture at VGA (640x480) resolution.
When used in a device such as a mobile phone, the engine can project a 40-inch or larger image with no speckle and a high-fill factor. Each engine uses an advanced liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) electronic imager in conjunction with 3M optics.
The engine is in production now, and 3M is in the process of partnering with consumer electronics companies to launch products in early 2008.
