Updating their 800, 700 and 200 lines, Garmin rounds out CES push with the massive, top-of-the-line Nuvi 5000.
Garmin International announced today four new models of their nuvi navigators, highlighted by the Nuvi 5000, a premium aftermarket navigation system with a 5.2-inch touchscreen display. Garmin also updated their 800, 700 and 200 lines with the brand new Nuvi 880, Nuvi 780 and Nuvi 260w.
The large, touchscreen interface on the Nuvi 5000 works with voice-prompts, turn-by-turn directions, route calculation, and automatic rerouting. The device will save up to 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on screen. A track log feature shows the user's previously traveled route on the display, and drivers can avoid certain roads and areas by adding rules to the device's routing program. Users can also supplement the pre-loaded maps with custom points of interest.
Users can also get traffic information from optional MSN Direct or FM TMC traffic receivers. The MSN Direct receiver provides up-to-date traffic information, fuel prices, weather reports, movie listings, news and stocks information for major metropolitan areas in the US. Owners can also plan trips and look up destinations from their computer via Microsoft Local Live and send locations and routes to the nuvi 5000. The FM TMC traffic receiver provides up-to-date traffic information for metropolitan areas in the United States and select European countries.
In addition, the Nuvi 5000 can also display video signals from an external analog source; internal MP3 player, audio book player and games are also included. Music is loaded onto an SD card and requires no additional software. Music and speech can be played over the vehicle's existing speakers through a built-in FM wireless transmitter or via the 3.5mm stereo output jack.
The nuvi 5000 is expected to be available in North America in February
for a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $800. The Nuvi 880 will be available in the second quarter of 2008 for an undetermined price. No pricing or availability has been announced for the Nuvi 780 or 260W.
Philip Berne, Matthew Ruiz, Edward Distel and Sindre Lia contribute to the CES 2008 coverage.
