The electronics manufacturer and movie rental pioneer team up, plan to release networked player to compete with Vudu, AppleTV
Netflix and LG Electronics announced today they will team up to develop a set-top box for consumers to stream movies and other programming from the Internet to HDTVs without a personal computer.
The announcement is in line with Netflix’s strategy of being a "hybrid," service that offers its members a multiple ways to receive movies and TV series for a monthly fee. Upon the release of the planned networked LG product later this year, Netflix subscribers will be able to watch movies streamed from the Netflix Web site on their large-screen home theater HDTVs in addition to their PCs.
LG plans to emphasize digital content as well as their hardware at next week’s International CES, and their networked player is planned for the second half of 2008.
