Japanese electronics maker raises the ceiling in 2.5-inch capacity.
With the Consumer Electronics Show about to kick off in Las Vegas, Japanese electronics maker Hitachi has announced a line of notebook hard drives with a half-terabyte (500 GB) capacity. The new Travelstar 5K500 is a 5400 rpm drive that uses perpendicular magnetic recording technology and a 3.0 Gb/s SATA interface.
While larger capacities have been available in notebooks by stacking multiple hard drives in RAID arrays, the new Travelstar 5K500 is the new single-drive capacity king in the 2.5-inch space, wresting the title from Western Digital's 320 GB Scorpio.
Hitachi also announced that ASUS will introduce two 1 TB multimedia notebooks that pair two Travelstar 5K500s together, the M50 and the M70. While ASUS hasn't discussed the specifics of either model, both will likely be 17-inch desktop replacements. More details are likely to follow during CES.
The Hitachi Travelstar 5K500 will be available worldwide in February.
