PDA-sized DVD-quality projector is designed to play content from various mobile devices.

Microvision is set to unveil the advanced prototype of a handheld, battery-powered, ‘plug-and-play’ projector at the Consumer Electronics Show next week.

SHOW is a stand-alone pico projector for mobile device applications and based on the company's single micro-mirror laser scanning technology. Powered by the company’s PicoP display engine, it is a PDA-sized, self-contained, battery operated, full-color laser projector.

SHOW connects directly to laptops, mobile phones, PMPs, digital cameras and other mobile devices to project high-resolution images and video onto any surface. The images projected can range from 12 inches to 100 inches, depending upon projection distance. Microvison expects the production version of the device to offer approximately 2.5 hours of continuous battery life, about enough to watch a movie.

Microvision says that SHOW can project a widescreen, WVGA (848 x 480) image. The PicoP display engine measures close to 5 cc in volume and approximately 7 mm in thickness. Microvision hopes to eventually embed the PicoP display engine directly into mobile consumer products.

Advanced prototypes of SHOW will be distributed in the first half of 2008; Microvision has planned for a commercial release by the end of 2008.

Philip Berne, Matthew Ruiz, Edward Distel and Sindre Lia contribute to the CES 2008 coverage.
