Miniature computer running Windows Vista will now support HSDPA networking for customers in Europe and Asia.
OQO announced on Wednesday that its new UMPC, the e2, will include support for HSDPA 3G networks in Europe. Billed by OQO as the world's smallest fully functional Windows Vista PC, the embedded HSDPA will surf European UMTS data networks at rates up to 3.6 Mbps.
The HSDPA model e2 is compatible with GPRS/EDGE networks and is SIM-free and network unlocked, meaning customers won't be handcuffed to a particular carrier. While the e2 is available for sale in the United States, the HSDPA model will not be. Still, we see no reason why OQO wouldn't bring the device to the U.S., as the company earlier this year released a similar device sporting 3G EV-DO networking.
The e2 measures 5.6 inches across and weighs about a pound. It uses a 1.6 Ghz VIA processor and comes with hard drives up to 120GB in size. Wi-Fi for 802.11 a/b/g is included, as is Bluetooth 2.0.
The suggested retail price of the HSDPA model is ₤1099 + VAT. Importers can pick one up from Dynamism.com, but don't count on 3G networking, as the radio doesn't pick up AT&T's HSDPA bands.
