Dell gears up for the holiday season with a 15.4-inch addition to XPS multimedia family of HD laptops. For some extra bucks, you can add a Blu-ray drive.
As the holiday season kicks in to high gear, Dell has announced a new addition to its XPS line of multimedia notebooks. The XPS M1530 is a 15.4-inch laptop that hopes to build on the success of Dell's popular 13-inch M1330. The new XPS M1530 has a high-definition display, slot-loading optical drive, DirectX 10 capable graphics and HDMI support.
For those who wish to take full advantage of the HD capabilities of the XPS M1530, Dell is offering an optional upgrade to a slot-loading Blu-ray drive for $500. Blu-ray is one of two competing, incompatible HD formats for next-generation DVDs (the other is HD-DVD).
Blu-ray-equipped laptops have been available for a while, but they're beginning to make their way from the larger 17-inch footprints into the smaller, more mainstream 15.4-inch models. HP, Sony and Acer all offer 15.4-inch Blu-ray notebooks -- although they are all still in the pricey $2,000 range -- but the arrival of the XPS M1530 shows that Blu-ray and HD laptops in particular continue to make headway into the mainstream market.
The new XPS M1530 weighs just under six pounds and features a one-inch profile. It includes one ExpressCard slot, standard 802.11 wireless connectivity and optional mobile broadband with Sprint or Verizon.
The XPS M1530 is available now from Dell's website in three colors: standard Tuxedo Black, optional Crimson Red and Alpine White. Base configurations begin at $999 and more advanced models with Blu-ray included start at $1,999.
