The Samsung SCH-U900 FlipShot phone updates the aging SCH-A990, a previous 3-megapixel camera phone in the same design family as the new device. The major design feature is the rotating screen, which can twist 180 degrees so that it's facing the user when flipped closed, thus acting as a view screen for the phone's camera. This update to the model adds a few features that bring it in line with today's multimedia phones, but doesn't do much for the more-important imaging features. The camera sensor hasn't seen an upgrade, and we would have liked to find an auto-focus lens or even a Xenon flash
The new FlipShot gets GPS, still a rarity on Samsung phones, believe it or not, for VZ Navigator. Bluetooth also gets an upgrade for stereo streaming using the A2DP profile. The phone also retains the TV out port of its predecessor, as well as the high-speed, 3G networking and support for Verizon's V Cast services, including the V Cast Music Store.
We would have liked to see more of a feature bump in the imaging department. We're not clamoring for a larger sensor, 3-megapixels seems fine for a good camera phone. So, it will be the lens quality and the images that prove whether this is a worthwhile convergence device. As always, we'll have more details once we get our hands on a review unit.
The Samsung SCH-U900 FlipShot is available now online at Verizon Wireless' site for $200. It will be also be available next Monday, November 26th, at BestBuy stores.
