Sanyo S1 is actually a nice looking Sanyo phoneBy Philip Berne, 8 November 2007

The Sanyo S1 may have more going for it than looks, but the thin candy bar's design is what caught our eye first

Sanyo isn't known for good looking phones, at least not by our standards. The Sanyo M1, for instance, was a good music phone that came packed with more internal memory than most phones at the time, but it looked like a mini-van. Now, Sanyo has taken a different tack, and the Sanyo S1 surprisingly seems to stress style over substance. Still, we're not completely convinced.

See, the Sanyo S1 is only 11mm thin, which is nice, but doesn't come close to Samsung's record setting Ultra Edition phones, like the SGH-X820, which is only 6.9mm thin and was released a year and a half ago. Otherwise the phone seems very average. We're especially skeptical when the press release brags first about the size of the speakerphone (24mm, by the way). So, we're curious about the speaker, but other features are ho-hum, standard Sprint Vision stuff.

The phone doesn't have any internal memory, and Sanyo doesn't mention an external card slot, so perhaps music won't be a selling point. All the better, since the phone uses a 2.5mm non-standard headphone jack.

One interesting note, the Sanyo S1 will be enabled for tethered modem support with your laptop. This is a very useful feature, and one we rarely see on non-smartphones. The phone should be available in January online and in Sprint stores, but you can get one right now at Radio Shack for free, with a contract agreement.
