Discontinuing sales of the 60GB PS3 configuration once supplies deplete, Sony releases bare-bones 40GB model.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced today a new Playstation 3 model to launch in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia this month.

The new PS3 packs a 40GB HDD but is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles. It also cuts the available USB 2.0 ports from four to two, and comes without a multi-memory card port.

The current Starter Pack, comprising of the 60GB backwards-compatible PS3, two SIXAXIS controllers and two Sony titles will be reduced in price to €499. The 60GB model will remain on on sale while supplies last, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the Starter Pack will be replaced by a different in-store promotion on the 60GB PS3.

Available October 10, the 40GB PS3 will retail for €399.
