AMD's 3D graphics engine coming to tomorrow's gaming phonesBy Sindre Lia, Tuesday 2 October 2007
Qualcomm is not surprisingly the licensee - possibly eagerly waiting to ruin yet another ground-breaking mobile feature.

AMD today announced an agreement to license graphics core technology to Qualcomm. This agreement will bring AMD's patented Unified Shader Architecture - first introduced in the Microsoft Xbox 360 - to Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets, potentially reaching millions of mobile phone users in the future.

Through its agreement with Qualcomm, AMD will aim to deliver innovative new graphics solutions, empowering the delivery of advanced hardware and software applications for outstanding mobile graphics experiences.

"The promise of upcoming handheld architectures supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics standards is expected to bring a game-changing evolution in 3D capabilities for developers," said Alex Caccia, CEO of IdeaWorks3D. "The popularity of the Qualcomm platform infused with AMD technology makes a winning combination, laying the groundwork for a wealth of new devices capable of supporting the same mind-blowing 3D performance seen in today's videogame consoles and PCs."

As with the mobile Internet, the gaming phone market will need traditional players to come in and innovate. So, until players such as Sony and Nintendo arrive, dedicated gaming phones will only have limited value in our opinion.
