Updating its Satellite notebook line with four new models, Toshiba adds two with HD DVD drives and tosses in a free HD DVD movie promotion for good measure.

Toshiba today announced a slew of new Satellite notebooks, highlighted by the P205, an Intel Core 2 Duo powered HD DVD “desktop replacement.” The P205 gives users the option of watching HD DVDs on the 1440x900 (WXGA+) 17-inch widescreen display, which is capable of displaying images in 720p. Toshiba also equipped the notebook with an HDMI output, allowing users to take advantage of the HD DVD drive and play HD content on their home televisions in up to 1080i resolution. We’re unsure why it isn’t capable of outputting in “full” 1080p HD, especially considering it is packaged with a beefy 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 video card. Toshiba managed to cram a subwoofer in addition to two Harman Kardon stereo speakers into the P205’s case, and uses Dolby Sound Room technology to deliver “virtual surround sound” when using stereo speakers or headphones.

Much like the deal Microsoft offered when they lowered the price of their Xbox 360 HD DVD player, Toshiba is offering five free HD DVD titles from a selection of 15 popular titles with the purchase of an HD DVD-enabled Satellite P205 notebook via a mail-in offer. Offer details are available at http://www.toshibadirect.com/hddvdpc until February 28, 2008.

Rounding out the update of the satellite line is the five pound, 14-inch M205, a budget productivity-geared notebook retailing at $950, the A205, another HD DVD notebook with a 15-inch display and built-in webcam, which is also eligible for the free HD DVD promotion and retails at $1,150, and the four and a half pound U305, a 13.3” notebook geared towards students, including a fingerprint scanner, wireless N card and DVD burner. The P205 retails at $1,450. All notebooks are available now.
